Managing Social Media Use For Better Mental Health

Author: LaToya Jones M.ED., LPC Associate

As a ’90s kid, I love that I grew up in a time before smartphones and social media. It meant I could actually experience life without feeling the need to capture every single moment for my hypothetical future grandkids. I’m pretty relieved that I survived my teenage years without the added drama of social media – one less thing to embarrass myself with, phew! But hey, now I’m faced with the hilarious task of navigating this social media craze with my daughter. It’s like becoming a digital Sherpa to guide her through the mountain of likes and followers.

I gradually discovered that avoiding certain websites became as effortless as avoiding vegetables during childhood. Surprisingly, I didn’t miss those sites at all! And after a few months of steering clear of Instagram, my fascination with the mundane details of strangers’ lives vanished like my motivation on a Monday morning. This change brought about various benefits.

Key Points to Remember:

  • Balance is key, unless you’re on a seesaw, then it’s just a matter of hanging on for dear life!
  • Setting specific ‘social media hours’ can help manage and control usage.
  • Turning off unnecessary notifications reduces digital distractions.
  • Avoid comparisons on social media to maintain a positive mental state.
  • Social media is a highlight reel, not a reflection of reality.
  • The journey to healthier digital habits is ongoing and personal.

Don’t wait until you’re seeing spiders on the walls and talking to yourself (more than usual)!
